$5.00 Minnie Mouse!

My daughter wanted a Minnie Mouse costume for school. I did have several laying around the house, but since she is not my size, and also not able to fit into a 2T I was out oshouldered dance costume with silver wear a one shouldered dance costume with silver sequin polka dots, but she wasn't crazy with that. She asked if I could make something with a men's t-shirt. (note she is wearing the dance costume under the t-shirt costume.)
I made the ears from wire, duct-tape, furry black fabric, and hot glue. I made them for myself several years ago, so I already had them on hand. Then for the dress - I bought an x-large men's red t-shirt. I had her put it on and we measured down to where she wanted it to hit on her waist. We marked it at 3/4 of an inch below this spot.

I made the ears from wire, duct-tape, furry black fabric, and hot glue. I made them for myself several years ago, so I already had them on hand. I then took the t-shirt and cut in a straight line at this mark horizonally across the shirt. The bottom part will be gathered and sewn on for the skirt. I sewed the bodice together so that it fit her, so now the waist was much smaller as were the sleeve openings. I took the sleeves that I had removed from the t-shirt, and I pinned them back on where they had been removed with the shirt inside out. Since they were much larger than the opening, I pin gathered the material so that it puckered and puffed up. I sewed the sleeves in place. I cut small holes on the inside of the sleeve hem, and threaded a piece of white ribbon through teh channel created by the hem. I finished that by trying the ribbon in a bow. Now the top half of the dress was ready for finishing details, so it was time to add the skirt. Since I simply cut off the bottom half of the t-shirt I already had a nice finished edge with a hem. So I took teh raw edge and gathered the skirt to match the bodice opening. I pinned the skirt in place with the shirt inside out and sewed it on. (if you don't understand one of the steps and need sewing tips, I will try to answer questions of you send them to me.) Voila! We have a dress, but it is just a little red t-shirt dress. So I took a container of white shoe polish and dotted the entire outfit. It didn't come out as beright as I was hoping so I took the shoe polish bottle with the round spounge and dipped it in white craft/fabric paint and went back over the circles. While I had the white paint out, I drew little collars at the top. I added a white ribbon around the waist. And the outfit was ready for her to have fun with. As you can see, she added black leggings and black flats and a big red bow. And then we adde the big white gloves and her adorable minnie mouse outfit was complete for next to nothing! Costumes on a budget! This was a win!

The epic Gingerbread house

So for my first post, I thought since it is nearly Christmas that I would share my awesome gingerbread house from a few years ago. I made the ginderbread from scratch (the package of gingerbread cookie mix is for cookies for the kids to decorate) I did run out of gringerbread and since I didn't want to make a trip to the store I made the last wall with graham crackers. I used jellybelly beans for the chimney and dyed coconut yellow for the thatched roof. I did use cans and boxes as support to help the icing set as it dried. I think that it turned out pretty great. I am thinking about trying Cinderella's caste next!
